Remembrance Day services modified by pandemic

Remembrance Day in Lamont County will be different this year thanks to the Covid pandemic.

The annual poppy campaign which is now underway will not have canvassers or manned poppy donation boxes as in the past.

“We won’t be able to have people man the poppy boxes in the stores, “ said Fort Saskatchewan Royal Canadian Legion Br. 27 manager Charleen Andrews. Fort Saskatch-ewan Legion takes in both Bruderheim and Lamont in its detachment area.

“The boxes will be distributed but it will be an honour system.”

She added businesses that traditionally buy wreaths to commemorate the cessation of hostilities and the end of World War One will have to order by calling the Legion branch.

“Because of social distancing restrictions, we won’t be able to send our volunteer members out into the community to sell wreaths this year,” she added.

“Businesses will be contacted by phone and then they can contact the Legion branch to get their wreath.

While the annual parade leading to the cenotaph in Fort Saskatchewan has been cancelled, there will be a service held.

However it will be held at the Shell Theatre at the DCC.

“It is a limited free ticketed event,” added Andrews. “Tickets are available on the Shell Theatre website. Until Oct. 26, purchase is promo coded to Veterans and Legion members on a first come first serve basis. Then on Oct. 27 they will open up to the public while they last.”

The event will also be live streamed, she added, so people can also watch from the comfort of their home. The event will start at 10:45 am.

Due to Covid 19 protocols, the Legion staff is asking that you socialize at your own table as mingling around like other years is not a possibility.

There will be BBQ hamburgers and draws through the afternoon.

In Mundare, town council decided, Oct. 6, the outdoor service at the town’s cenotaph would be held with social distancing rules in place provided the temperature was above -15 C.

“If not we can move it to the MRC,” said chief administrative officer Colin Zyla.

A lunch is generally served along with the meal, but Zyla recommended it be cancelled again because of crowd size limited due to the pandemic.

Lamont High School has generally held a large, community-wide Remembrance service in the gymnasium but that has been cancelled for this year. However, there will be small observances of Remembrance Day in the classrooms for students.
