Photo shoot of angry parents prompts warnings from EIPS director, police

A police vehicle is positioned near Andrew school where a photo was being conducted of parents upset by the recent closure of Andrew’s junior high program for The Lamont Leader. The officer in the vehicle chats with a member of the local fire department (in the white truck) who took part in the photo.

On Victoria Day, upset parents reached out to each other on Facebook to gather support in taking a photo together to go along with The Lamont Leader article about the closure of Andrew Jr. High.

Upon hearing of the upcoming photo opportunity, EIPS communications director Laura McNabb contacted this reporter by cell phone with warnings of public safety, possible police fines for a public gathering, and a request to remain away from school property.

Andrew mayor Sheila Lupal and her husband Chris take part in the newspaper photo to show their support for Andrew School. Lupal was upset by the school board’s decision to remove the junior high program from Andrew school.

“I don’t have a problem with the covering of this story,” she said. “I just want people to be safe.”

In keeping with recent social distancing guidelines, the group stayed under 50 participants and remained two metres apart while having their photo taken.

In spite of adhering to the guidelines and staying away from school property, three calls came into Two Hills police warning of public gatherings prior to the photo taking place.
