Oilfield contribution helps Meals in Motion

Michelle Andriashyk, program co-ordinator for the FCSS Lamont County Region accepts a cheque for $800 from Cody Coursaux, field foreman of Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd. The company donated the money to the County’s Meals in Motion program. Helping are Coursaux’s co-workers Ted Stratichuk, Joshua Jendruck, and Ken Barr.

An oilfield company operating in Lamont County has made a donation to the County’s Meals in Motion program to further help feed seniors in need.

Tamarack Valley Energy gave the Meals in Motion $800 in a presentation properly social distanced at the Lamont County offices July 2. The money came from the Tamarack Acquisi-tion Corp.

“We’re giving them some money so they can keep the program going a little longer,” said Cody Coursaux, a field foreman with Tamarack Valley Energy.

Tamarack’s head office is located in Calgary, but Coursaux works from a location in Bruderheim.

“We’re an oil producer and we have quite a few pump jacks in the County,” he said. He admitted this spring’s wet weather is creating havoc in trying to get trucks into empty storage facilities at some locations.

“That’s our biggest issue. We’re not getting into our leases and we don’t want to destroy our roads and we don’t want to destroy any County roads.”

The Meals in Motion for Seniors program began on Apr. 27 and was met with resounding success.

“We identified a need for seniors to have more access to meals by a COVID 19 social support survey we launched earlier this year,” said program coordinator Michelle Andriashyk by email.

“We also asked a number of organizations if they would be interested in partnering with us to help cook the meals. A number of them declined due to the risk of COVID 19.”

Elk Island Catering then got involved by offering to prepare meals.

At the beginning of the program Elk Island Catering prepared 35 meals on a weekly basis, said Andriashyk. At that time they were selling the majority of the meals for $5 and only having one or two meals left over.

The group is now distributing upwards of 100 meals weekly, she said as she received the cheque from Tamarack Valley.

She added they had received provincial funding which will allow the program to be extended until the end of the year.

Andriashyk explained that the program supports seniors in the Lamont County area including Lamont, Chipman, Andrew, Mundare and Bruderheim as well as surrounding hamlets.

She added that to date most of the seniors have been able to get to nearby seniors centres to get their meals, but the Bruderheim seniors centre will be closing for the summer.
