Multimillion expansion connects railway terminal with both CN and CP mainlines

Alberta Midland Railway Terminal, a 950-car storage yard for chemical rail cars in Lamont County, has announced expansion plans set to get underway by June of this year.

Alberta Midland currently sits along the CN line and can service industrial customers in the Alberta Industrial Heartland, said company president Darcy Heggie during an information session Feb. 27.

The new expansion, costing between $11 and $12 million will create nine new tracks and connect with the CP rail north of the ALRT existing site.

“Subject to all the proper permitting and approvals we expect to get started sometime between April and June, subject to runoff and all that stuff,” said Heggie. “We’d like to have it in service by June of 2021.”

Heggie said there would be nine new tracks that connect the existing yard along with the CP line. The south lands connecting with the CN have a loop track  and the nine additional track will connect with the loop.

“It allows more opportunities for the industrial and petrochemical customers to smooth out their supply chain.

The announcement of Alberta Midland will have a positive impact in Lamont County, said manager of economic development Jim Newman.

“It’s huge impact,” he stated. “We’ve been working with Alberta Midland for the past five years.

“This is an infrastructure piece that’s a good fit for any other industry in our area,” he added. “Whether it be a service industry or heavy industrial the fact it connects both rails is huge for our County. It gives us an advantage over other municipalities that potential investors might be looking at.”

“It something potential investors are always looking for.”

He added CN offers services to the west coast and to Asia, while CP can offer service to the west coast and the gulf coast.

Newman said he missed the announcement due to being in Calgary meeting with prospective customers who may want to locate in the County.

“I am in contact with the industry on a regular basis,” he said. “I always advise them on what’s happening with Alberta Midland because it is such a beneficial infrastructure piece.”

Heggie said in conjunction with the additional construction connecting the CP track, the company may put in a trans modal facility which would allow shippers with more conventional freight access both mainlines of rail.

“We haven’t got that in our permitting right now,” he said. “But we’re looking at a multi commodity transload facility,”
“I’d say it could come on stream sooner rather than later,” added Heggie.

“We’ve contemplated accompanying storage and warehousing,” he said. “It would be a mixture of us and third party businesses.”

He said he had no timeline, “but it could coincide with existing contraction. We’d just have to add to our permitting.”

Heggie added, the announcement recently by CANDO rail services to construct a rail yard across the North Saskatchewan River in Sturgeon County won’t have any impact on the Alberta Midland operations.

“We won’t be working against each other,” he said.

“This will assist in de-bottlenecking the Alberta Industrial Heartland region and give shippers an option to do what they do best. It’s all about helping the shippers get their product to market in a safe and efficient manner.”
