Loosening of restrictions has Andrew store owner/musician entertaining again

Andrew resident and owner of Mallard Food Mart, Steve Hillis, poses with his guitar while performing during Andrew’s Canada Day activities. Hillis, known as the Voices of Legends is happy to be back to performing publicly again after the pandemic.

An opportunity to purchase the Mallard Food Mart in Andrew two years ago brought musician Steve Hillis and his wife Linda to a new life from their home in Chilliwack BC.

“Our children are all grown up and living on their own so we began looking for an opportunity to move out here and someone told me about the food mart,” he said.

Hillis felt the opportunity was just right.

“I figured when we move here, we can combine living here, being based out of here, working here but still getting to play music all over Alberta and Saskatchewan,” said Hillis, 57.

Hillis, typically billed as Voices of Legends, performs many different legendary talents as a one man show with his guitar and notable voice.

“I have costumes and I can perform as Elvis or Roy Orbison and others. I use props to become the person I am performing. My forte is Garth Brooks and I’ve been doing that show since 1996,” he said.

Soon after arriving in Andrew, Hillis experienced a harsh reality when the pandemic took hold. Restrictions placed on public gatherings took its toll on his ability to entertain.

“COVID happened right after we got here,” he said. “It was the whole reason we moved out here. We could have lived anywhere, but this opportunity came up for us and we knew some people here.”

Although the going was rough for Hillis throughout the pandemic, he said things are slowly getting back to normal.

“I’m playing almost full time again. I’m booked in some bars and other events for the next while,” he said.

As Hillis looked around the crowd gathering for the Canada Day activities, including his guitar playing and singing, he said he felt optimistic for the future.

“I think as of today things are definitely looking up!” he said smiling.
