Lamont Fire Department gets fourth female member
The Lamont Fire Department has gained another member to their team after newcomer Brittney Poleon, 29, completed her recruitment training and became a full-fledged fire fighter last week.
After arriving in Lamont from Edmonton last year with her three children, ages two, four and six, Poleon said she looked forward to fulfilling a childhood dream: serving as a first responder.
“I grew up in Toronto. When I was 14, I saw everything that was going on. I saw kids getting kidnapped on the news and I wanted to help. Then I saw (news reports) of fires burning (out of control) and I also wanted to help. I realized I would have to choose between being a police officer or a fire fighter,” she said.
Poleon said she wanted a small-town atmosphere to raise her children and decided on Lamont where she applied to the fire department online.
“I’ve only been here a couple of months, but I’m so happy I’ve completed my recruitment training. It’s the goal I’ve been working for. The fire fighters have made me feel like I am a part of a family which is exactly what I wanted to feel like. I feel accepted,” she said. “And now I get to go out on calls.”
Lamont Fire Chief Scott Calder is also happy to welcome Brittney into the fold.
“Brittney has been a great addition to our department. She is dedicated and hard working. We are excited to have her as a responding member of Lamont County Emergency Services,” he said by text.
To date, the Lamont Fire Department is home to 22 firefighters including 18 men and four women.
