Lamont Chamber to join with Fort Sask. Chamber

The Lamont and District Chamber of Commerce executive members in 2019 (L-R) Judy Koschade, Kent Klassen, Cathy Goulet (past president) Deb Wasylynchuk, Doug Sullivan (current president) Carolyn Olechow, and Deb Fountain. The LDCC recently decided to merge with the Fort Saskatchewan and District Chamber of Commerce.

After more than two years with struggling membership engagement, the Lamont and District Chamber of Commerce will merge their organization with the Fort Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce.

“The Lamont and District Chamber of Commerce has come to the decision to merge with the Fort Saskatchewan and District Chamber of Commerce and the Lamont and District Chamber entity will dissolve,” said Lamont Chamber president Doug Sullivan in a statement by email.

Sullivan added that there will be many benefits for current members with the new arrangements.

“The Fort Chamber has full time staff available to support membership, with support resources that the volunteer-driven Lamont & District has not been able to access effectively,” he said. “A memorandum of understanding will be developed and communicated to membership in the next few weeks.”

Fort Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce executive director Tamara Dables said membership to a chamber is vital for businesses of all sizes.

“It’s so vital to have a chamber for businesses to have a chamber to represent them. Those businesses need a voice,” she said.

Dabels added that she reached out previously to the Lamont Chamber after they experienced problems acquiring quorum for their AGM.

“Two years ago, when I became aware of the struggles the Lamont Chamber had in acquiring quorum for their AGM I reached out to (then) president Cathy Goulet to see if we could support her in any way,” she said. “I wasn’t sure how we could help but I asked her what do you need.”

Dabels added that after meeting to discuss what a merger would look like, an official decision was made in late spring.

“At the end of April, the two boards met. During a meeting May 19 an official decision by the Fort District board was made deciding a merger would be the best option,” she said.

Details for existing members of the Lamont Chamber are expected to surface in the coming weeks.
