Lamont Ag. Society fed up with vandalism
Recent vandalism at the Lamont Agricultural Society Rodeo Grounds has the society president saying enough is enough.
“You know,” said president Terry Eleniak. “We’ve got a lot of people, good people, who work their backsides off to put some events on here for the Lamont community.
“To have this kind of vandalism going on is just heartbreaking.”
Eleniak said he went to the grounds during the past weekend to check and see if the property had sustained any damage from the wind storms early last week.
What he found were walls panels from the two main open buildings beaten to the ground.
“It wasn’t wind damage,” he fumed. “Because the panels are lag screwed into beams with three inch screws. They aren’t just going to fall out.”
Eleniak said the panel damage follows on the tracks of thieves trying to steal the Society’s skid steer loader back in November. In that case, the thieves got the unit stuck in mud, but still did damage to a wheel and tire to the tune of $1,400.
Eleniak adds the Society hasn’t reported either incident to the RCMP because they don’t want to make any insurance claims.
“It’s just enough to fly under the deductible.”
He said there was a break-in a few years ago where a sound system and tables and chair were taken.
“We went through insurance then, but then our rates went up. This is a very hard hit on the society. We don’t have a lot of money.”
He added the Society is coming off a year where both of its major events were cancelled because of the pandemic.

Eleniak added when the Society has its next meeting additional security measures will be on the agenda.
He said many of the Society’s assets are currently taken off the site and “we shouldn’t have to do that.”
“We’re doing this for the betterment of our community,” he said. “We have the facility so we can make our community stronger.
“We’ve been busting our butts trying to stay in the community and work for the community,” said Eleniak. “When you think of it, while it is Ag. Society property it really belongs to the entire community because they are the ones who’ve made the donations so we can make it better and provide some activities for everyone.”
Eleniak is concerned that these types of incidents may affect the volunteer base also.
“We’re not making big dollars, but if we’re losing money to this sort of thing, it impacts our volunteers.
“They could say why are we doing this if we’re constantly getting vandalized.”
Eleniak pointed out the Society has loyal customers and supporters and if the vandalism goes on they could pull their support.
“It’s very disheartening,” he said. “There’s good people in this community who go out of their way to help us and this really takes the wind out of all of our sails.”
