County wants Ag. Minister to see devastation firsthand
Lamont County would like to have the Agriculture and Forestry Minister Devin Dreeshen come to the County to hear about the plight of local farmers and maybe even take a tour of some of the devastation in the area.
This came about after discussing whether a resolution to the Agricultural Service Board Northeast Regional Conference on Oct. 27 could speed up any government action when an agricultural disaster is declared by a county.
Lamont County Agricultural Fieldman Terry Eleniak asked if the ASB had any desire to put forth resolutions at the first County ASB meeting held since last March on Sept. 2.
“I guess I would want to know what is the use of us declaring an agricultural disaster,” asked ASB member Reeve David Diduck.
ASB chairman Daniel Warawa suggested it was to create an awareness to the different levels of government.
“But there’s been no action by either level of government to this point,” said Diduck. “And I’m not sure there’s going to be.”
He pointed out farmers were facing a real financial crisis and five area counties had declared agricultural disasters, but there had been no response from any level of government.
“The farmers in Lamont County and other areas are going to be in financial difficulty going forward and it doesn’t seem to be recognized at any government level and I’m not sure if a resolution going forward would help us.”
Eleniak said going back to 2002 if a municipality had declared a disaster then if there was a financial contribution from higher levels of government then the County could qualify for financial assistance. Without declaring then there wouldn’t be anything.

Eleniak said the province through crop and weather reports knows the northeast area of the province has been affected this year.
Diduck suggested he’d like to see a resolution asking that when a local disaster is declared the government should at least do an investigation in the area.
“With four or five areas in one zone declaring an agricultural disaster then they have to recognize there’s a commonality there,” he said.
“I’m sure you can get hard evidence to prove the hardship but how do we get something to draw the government’s attention.”
After further discussion the ASB decided to invite the Agriculture and Forestry Minister to come to an ASB meeting or council meeting, or even better, bring him out for an area tour.
Diduck suggested he would reach out to local MLA Jackie Armstrong Homeniuk to see if she could arrange a meeting.
“Diduck later said a resolution that they could take forward would be the government should take some action when more than one County declared an agricultural disaster.
