Bruderheim sewer lines clogged from over flushing
The COVID 19 crisis is not only taxing on our personal and professional lives, it’s also taxing on the community’s sewer system.
The town of Bruderheim experienced it’s third major sewer problem in 12 days on Apr. 15.
Chief Administrative Officer Patty Podoborozny said the backups are not only very costly for the town to fix, but they are preventable.
“This type of incident almost never happens. Now it’s happened three times in 12 days,” she said. “Disposable does not mean flushable.”
Podoborozny added that town staff were anticipating some possible issues with the sewer lines due to the larger number of people spending more time in their homes during the COVID crisis.
“Whenever people are home more, they flush more,” she said. “We sent out communication in early April to let residents know what is and isn’t ok to flush knowing we might have problems.
It’s only ok to flush the three P’s; pee, poo and paper (toilet paper).”
Podoborozny added that problems were first noticed in early April.
“On Apr. 3, we had the first of three wastewater back ups at our lift station in Brookside,” she said.
Dennis Tomuschat, Bruderheim public works director, explained that a lift station is a section of the sewer system that pushes the waste water to where it needs to go when gravity won’t do the job.

Tomuschat added that the main issue with the lines is due to residents flushing solids, primarily sani-wipes.
“The sani-wipes are collecting in the wet well which holds the sewage before it gets pumped out. The wipes accumulated enough to nearly plug the sewer mains leading from residences,” he said.
Tomuschat added that plugging of the sewer mains would have been disastrous.
“It would have meant no flushing of toilets or using of drains for all of Brookside until we got it fixed,” he said. “We were dangerously close to that point.”
Tomuschat also credited the SCADA (supervisory controls and data acquisition) system for being notified so quickly and knowing what the problems were.
“I had this system installed two years ago. It’s a computer that tells us how the overall sanitary and distribution systems are running in town,” he said. “Having this system helps us pinpoint when there are problems including when the pumps are plugging up.”
CAO Podoborozny explained the financial cost to the town when the sewer system becomes compromised.
“We try to fix the issue ourselves by using chemical in the line to break up the blockage. When that doesn’t work, we have to hire a hydrovac truck to come and suck it out,” she said.
