Twinned North Saskatchewan River bridge will benefit Lamont area commuters
The twinning of the North Saskatchewan River crossing bridge in Fort Saskatchewan will have some positives for Lamont County commuters.
Transportation minister Rick McIvor said the bridge twinning is on schedule to be completed by the fall of 2022.
He joined Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong Homeniuk, Fort Saskatchewan Mayor Gale Katchur, and a couple of local Fort Saskatchewan councillors to provide an update at the bridge site Sept.1.
“This bridge will give the gift of time for a great number of Albertans,” said McIvor.
He said the project had been in the works for years and his office had received numerous phone calls from Fort Saskatchewan residents seeking updates on its progress.
Mayor Katchur said, “This bridge was the number one priority for all citizens in Fort Saskatchewan and in the Alberta Industrial Heartland for a long time.”
“The bridge is essential for moving goods and services throughout the area.”
She said once the bridge is completed her city’s capital budget has plans in the works to expand parts of Highway 15 through the city to up to six lanes.
In addition, she said as Fort Saskatchewan and Sherwood Park expand new corridors will be constructed to help move traffic.

MLA Homeniuk stated the bridge twinning would be a benefit for residents in Lamont County, Bruderheim and the Town of Lamont.
“It’s fantastic because it will allow more people to use the bridge, it will give people more time, and it should help promote the development of future industrial development in the Heartland.
McIvor said he had nothing to announce about the twinning of Highway 15 from the Shell Scotford corner to Highway 45.
“As traffic patterns grow we’ll be watching this,” he said. “We have certainly heard from the municipalities in the area asking for that.”
The MLA and Transportation Minister later in the day had a meeting with Lamont County council where plans were unveiled for a functional planning study covering the area from the Lamont-Strathcona border to the Town of Lamont.
Reeve David Diduck said the intent was to develop a plan in regards to twinning Highway 15 and it could even look at potentially twinning Highway 29 to Secondary Highway 830.
“Essentially it will look at traffic volumes and the potential for industrial development in the area. As it stands right now there is a lot of traffic flowing between the town of Lamont and where the divided Highway 15 begins.”
He expects the study to be done sometime in 2021.
