While Canada Post and its union CUPW continue to hit obstacles in ongoing negotiations, as of Tuesday, May 27, there is still no strike action in place. Despite giving a strike notice last week, CUPW and Canada Post remain at the negotiating table. CUPW announced late last week that they would be suspending all employee overtime, which Canada Post says will cause some delays, but ultimately is less disruptive than the alternative.
As always, this is an evolving situation that can change day by day, hour by hour.
As it currently stands, the May 28 edition of The Lamont Leader is expected to go out to mailed markets as it normally would without delays. With no strike in place yet, we are hopeful to be able to perform all usual Wednesday deliveries to local markets. Out of county markets will also be mailed as usual, but we can’t guarantee their timely delivery due to the change in Canada Post overtime mandates as well as the lingering strike threat.
Should a work stoppage unexpectedly begin as early as Thursday, May 29, we have a weekly E-edition absolutely FREE to read online here and on Patreon, and missed copies of the physical paper can be picked up at our office in Lamont.
If a Canada Post work stoppage begins in the next week prior to the June 4 edition, we will roll out our full strategy from last November. As always, the online E-edition of the paper which will be completely free to read on all platforms; there will be more store copies available, and there will be additional pickup locations including the Leader office.
We apologize for the uncertainty and will do our best to pivot with any challenges ahead, while hoping Canada Post and CUPW can resolve their issues and focus towards the future. The long-term viability of Canada Post as a crown corporation is in serious danger and it is our opinion that the threat of another dispute only serves to expedite its demise.
